Von Willebrand Disease DNA Test – Short Symptoms and Characteristics

Von Willebrand’s disease type 1 (vWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder among dogs, caused by lack of von Willebrand Factor, specific protein crucial for clotting process at the sites of injuries. Deficiency of this protein causes spontaneous bleeding from mucosal surfaces and prolonged bleeding after trauma, which can be life-threatening after surgery. Especially high frequencies of affected dogs have been revealed among certain breeds, such as German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, Standard poodles, Shetland sheepdogs, and Golden retrievers.
