Canine DNA profiling by ISAG standard
Canine DNA profiling has become an important part of commonly performed genetic tests for dogs. When it comes to such an important genetic screening, we are proud to announce that AnimaLabs took part in International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) interlaboratory testing and got awarded Rank 1, confirming analysis accuracy of over 99%! The highest scale of quality is what our laboratory always strives for and we our happy that our efforts have been confirmed once again.
What is canine DNA profiling?
DNA profile is a unique genetic identification of your dog, based on the analysis of specific genetic markers. Analysis of these markers is used solely for genetic identification, and cannot be used as a screen for identification of hereditary traits or disorders.
DNA profiling is commonly used in following situations:
· theft
· exclusion of genetic diseases (”clean by parentage”)
· insemination
· selection of breeding pair
· paternity verification
· lifelong identification (in cases of microchip failure)

I would like to order a DNA profile for my dog. What is the procedure?
Canine DNA profiling can be done from two sample types; buccal swab or blood sample. This type of analysis is a very sensitive, and it requires a good quality and quantity DNA. Due to possible contaminations of buccal swab, caused by food particles, bacteria present in the mouth, or inadequate sampling procedure, blood sample is recommended. In case repeat analysis is required, caused by poor sample quality, the repeat analysis shall be charged.
After ensuring that DNA isolated from the sample is of good quality, the results are ready within 10 days. We guarantee testing 17 out 22 markers, according to ISAG standards.
Why is interlaboratory testing important?
AnimaLabs is ISAG member and participates in interlaboratory quality tests, which are held once every two years. Interlaboratory testing is a standardised procedure in which same samples are tested by different laboratories and obtained results are compared. Participation of a laboratory in interlaboratory testing, or comparison tests, is beneficial for several reasons:
- test method validation
- personnel proficiency validation
- demonstration of laboratory good performance
Earning Rank 1 in ISAG interlaboratory test, AnimaLabs has once again proven that our analyses are done with the highest standards of quality, and we are happy to certify our customers’ trust!
